August Peer Counselling Workshops in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City

In August 2010, the activities of peer counselling took place in an animated atmosphere in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City with the purpose of popularizing this method of psychological support to the people with disabilities (PWDs) in the two big cities.

From August 09th to 11th, Hanoi Independent Living Center (HILC) organized a Peer Counselling Workshop for its eight members. The meetings were very interesting and full of joys. After three days of the workshop, the attendants have been equipped with basic skills to organize peer counselling sessions as well as to share and support mutually for a more self-confident and integrated life. Following the workshop, the attendants will make regular PC meetings.

According to Tuoi Tre Newspaper, from August 23rd to August 27th, in  Ho Chi Minh City, the first peer counselling workshop for 11 persons with severe disabilities was organized by the Disability Resource and Development (DRD) and the Human Care Association of Japan. Under the instructions by Ms. Hiroko Akiyama – Director of Hino Independent Living Center (Japanese), Mr. Yoshihiro Mitsuoka – Vice General Secretary of Human Care Association (Japanese) and Ms. Nguyen Bich Thuy – Executive Director of Hanoi Independent Living Center, the PWDs in Ho Chi Minh City have chance to get familiar with such contents as: concept of independent living, methodology – purpose – principles of peer counselling, solution to discharge emotion, role of the PWDs, etc.

It is known that the workshop is the first activity of the Independent Living Program in Ho Chi Minh City, starting from August 01st, 2010. Ms. Akiyama says: "We hope to expand the training program on peer counselling so that Vietnamese PWDs in other provinces and cities can take part in. It is the PWDs  trained on this issue who  will share the information with the other PWDs”.
